"Why should I care about preventing teen pregnancy? I'm not a parent and I am not a professional who works with young people! In fact, I don't even know any teenagers!"
The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, one of MOAPPP's national partners, takes the position that reducing the nation's rate of teen pregnancy is one of the most strategic and direct means available to improve overall child well-being and to reduce persistent child poverty.
Teen pregnancy is closely linked to a host of critical social issues - poverty and income, overall child well-being, education, health, child welfare and other risky behaviors. Unless addressed, these social issues have a price tag for the taxpayer. A new analysis from the National Campaign shows that teen childbearing (age 19 and younger) in Minnesota cost taxpayers (federal, state, and local) at least $142 million in 2004. Sadly, most of these costs are associated with negative consequences for the children of teen mothers (i.e. health and social services).
The good news is there has been significant progress to reduce teen birth rates in the last ten years. The teen birth rate in Minnesota declined 28 percent between 1991 and 2004 saving Minnesota taxpayers an estimated $72 million in 2004 alone. Despite this progress, MOAPPP's work is not done. There are still 13 teenagers giving birth every day in Minnesota.
